On Decoherence

In quantum mechanics, a particle does not have a single, defined state until it is measured. Before the measurement, it exists in superposition — all its possible states overlapping, none of them more real than the others. The act of looking is what forces one of those possibilities to become real. The others die quietly, without anyone noticing.

This phenomenon is called decoherence. It is not a metaphor. It is a documented physical event. Particles behave this way. Quantum computers are built around it. The universe, at its smallest scale, does not commit to a single reality until something — a sensor, an eye, a thought — demands it.

This is the first kind of decoherence: reality itself does not exist as a defined state until observed.

There is a second kind, older and broader, that has nothing to do with physics.

Gravity existed before Newton. Microbes existed before Pasteur. Dark matter exists now, even though nobody fully understands it. The objects of these discoveries were always there, indifferent to whether anyone noticed them. What did not exist, before the moment of observation, was the concept — the name, the structure, the place in human knowledge. A cave-dweller felt gravity but did not have gravity. The phenomenon was real; the idea was not yet.

Plato approached this from the opposite direction. For him, the world of perceived things was a faint imitation of perfect, eternal Ideas that exist independently of any observer. The mind does not create — it recollects. Truth is waiting to be remembered. This view is beautiful but inverse: it presumes the Idea is already complete, and that observation is recovery, not creation.

What both views agree on, in their disagreement, is that there is a gap between the world as it stands and the world as it enters knowledge. Something has to happen for the second to emerge from the first. Call it observation, measurement, recollection, language. Without it, the world is silent.

This second decoherence — cultural, conceptual, linguistic — is not the same as the quantum kind. Confusing them would be dishonest. In physics, observation causes reality itself. In culture, observation causes the knowledge of reality; the reality underneath was always there. They are separate phenomena. But they share a structure: nothing fully exists until something looks at it and gives it shape.

Something has changed, recently, in how this second decoherence operates. Tools have appeared that generate possibilities faster than any human ever could — a song, an image, a voice, a face that never existed, all produced in seconds and forgotten in seconds. The volume of unobserved potential has become absurd. Most of what is now generated dies as wave function: produced but never witnessed, made but never made real by anyone.

The instrument is what we call artificial intelligence, but the structure is much older.

This project lives inside that structure.

Everything published here exists in superposition until it is read. The work is not the file. The work is the encounter. A song generated but not heard is not music. A character imagined but not seen is not a character. A piece of writing not yet opened is not yet writing. They are all potential, sitting in the dark, waiting for someone to arrive.

The fictionality is not a deception. It is the point. The things published here are not fake versions of real things — they are real versions of fictional things, made real in the moment they are encountered. Two readers will not encounter the same work, even if they read the same words. None of those readings are wrong. All of them are the work.

You are reading this now. By reading it, you have already collapsed it into one of its possible meanings. This sentence does not mean the same thing to you as it does to someone else. That is not a flaw of the writing. That is the writing.

The line between real and observed has always been thinner than people assume. This project lives on that line.

Strip away the instrument, and one of two things happens: the project survives in another form, or it never existed at all.
